Gary Miller will be talking about the passage of Proposition 114 by Colorado voters directing Colorado Parks and Wildlife to reintroduce gray wolves to western Colorado by the end of 2023. Planning for this important, and controversial, effort is proceeding, with several “hiccups” along the way. This talk will cover the natural history and ecology of wolves, the most pressing issues surrounding their reintroduction, and the most recent status of the evolving reintroduction plan to restore gray wolves as functional components of our ecosystems.
The main focus of wildlife biologist Gary C. Miller’s career has been the ecology and recovery of nongame, threatened and endangered species. He served as wildlife researcher, research leader and statewide ecologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (now Parks and Wildlife). He and his colleagues played key roles in such projects as the reintroduction of Canada lynx, recovery of peregrine falcons, and numerous other rare species. He also worked for the National Park Service at Rocky Mountain, Isle Royale, and Shenandoah National Parks. His interest in the ecology and management of small, rare, “founder” populations has continued in recent years, and he has closely followed the natural immigrations and the upcoming reintroduction of gray wolves to the state.
